Club Level Players who fell in The Great War
Dear all,
I wonder if anyone has come across any studies on specific clubs and their respective Great War dead - other than Stephen's superb Final Whistle, of course.I have tried contacting a few clubs but have not heard anything back.
I would be very interested to hear of any such studies.
All the best,
Tim

Club Level Players Durham City
Am currently putting together biographys of Durham City RFU players who lost their lives in WW1 and players who returned as part of the WW1 Remembrance this year.
19 Players lost their lives including A F Maynard England International, C Y Adamson Barbarian (also his brother R W Adamson C Y Adamsons two sons and elder brother John also fought but returned safely), H J Dingle (brother of A "Mud" Dingle England International who also died), Noel Forbes Humphreys Welsh International & British Lion. Thomas William Callinan , later captain of Cambridge XV and back for London Irish honed is early skills here. We are hoping that the Mini & Junior Section will research the other families named on the memorial and those that came back to continue playing.
The idea is to produce a commemoratiive pamphlet and have a service of remembrance at the Clubs memorial grandstand in August 2014 - as Poppy Appeal Organiser for the Royal British Legion we intend to have a formal service with standard bearers stc. Also proposed is the scattering of Flanders Poppy seeds by the children as part of the event. Will keep you posted on any further "discoveries" from Durham City.

Pat,
There is some stuff on Hugh, as well as Jimmy Dingle (who has a whole chapter) in my Final Whistle book. I may also have some other research dump stuff on Hugh, which I did not use, if you let me know email address.

Saracens Amateurs RUFC
Hello
I am currently researching into Saracens RUFC players that fell in the war, (through the amateur club still at Bramley Road ground,) with a view of being able to create an honour roll.
If anyone has come across any players that played for Saracens at any point it would be great to hear about them. Sadly no membership rolls have survived (club archives lost in a drunken incident in 1920's apparently...) but I have been able to source names from old team photos, match reports and some obituaries. These sources tend to only give the 1st team though. Any advice and suggestions welcome, either on players that played or how I could source more names to search.

Re: Club Level Players who fell in The Great War
Tom,
The problem will indeed be that only the 1st XV were reported in the press. But in those days the starting XV was fluid from week to week so you may get more names than you expect. Try The Times online archive, or - with great difficulty - the local newspaper, although have a feeling that the Newspaper Archive which is part of the BL is closed before moving to Scotland or somewhere outlandish.
To those watching this forum, I hear that Gloucester also have a book out on WW1

Thank you for the quick reply. I've been through The Times archive with some limited success so have the various local papers to plow through. Depite moving to a nice new reading room in st pancras (from colindale) a lot of newspapers still unavailable so I hope they dont end up in scotland!
