Where we stand Empty Irish Internationals to die in WW1

Post  patrickcasey Wed Mar 24, 2010 8:59 am

Wikipedia has the Irish list wrong. It should be
8 listed by CWGC
Captain Basil Maclear 24th May 1915
Captain Ernest Cotton Deane MC 25th September 1915
2nd Lieutenant Vincent McNamara 29th November 1915
Captain Robert Balderston Burgess 9th December 1915
Captain Alfred Squire Taylor 31st July 1917
Major Albert Lewis Stewart 4th October 1917
Captain William Victor Edwards 29th December 1917
Major William John Beatty OBE 10th February 1919

Those that died from the effects of the war, are listed in books but not by CWGC
Major Robertson Stewart Smyth MD 5th April 1916
2nd Lieutenant Jasper Thomas Brett 4th February 1917

I have already done these but they need tidying up for a book. There are lots of notes rather than a proper story. Please put me down for that.

I have also done a lot on the Welsh man Garnons already. In fact I think I am right in saying a friend of mine is in touch with his relatives. It would be good to get in touch with relatives to get hold of photos and stories. Also good idea to include a bit on where and how they died.

Where we stand Empty Sources of Information

Post  patrickcasey Thu Mar 25, 2010 6:51 am

For those that don't know the Commonwealth & War Graves Commission has a searchable list of all Commonwealth forces to die in both WW1 and WW2 at www.cwgc.org
They have assured me in the past that they have listed everyone
There are some details with most soldiers

www.ancestry.co.uk has scans of WW1 Medal cards, WW1 Service records, WW1 Pension Records, National Rolls and De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour

http://www.ww1photos.com/ has photos of many soldiers.

I have the WW1 Memorial books Bond of Sacrifice and Our Heroes.

I also have many Glos Regt and Somerset Light Infantry books

Also copies of many WW1 history books if anyone needs me to look anything up

Good idea Patrick, if we could all post some of the titles that we own in relation to WW1 it might be of use to others.

As mentioned before, archive.org has a number of rolls of honour including Harrow School, Edinburgh University, Aberdeen University and De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour (if you can get it to work!).

In my own collection I have several reference books including:

Memorials to Old Rugbeians
Balliol College War Memorial Book
Winchester War Service Roll
House of Commons Book of Remembrance
Stock Exchange Roll of Honour
Divisional and Regimental Histories
Other personal memorial volumes

This is by no means a complete list, so, if you are looking for something please do ask.

I am also builing up a few nice rugby reference books that may be of interest but I suspect most of you will have these as this is a new element to my library.

Where we stand Empty US Soldiers to die in WW1

Post  patrickcasey Thu Mar 25, 2010 8:11 am

I understand www.ancestry.co.uk has a list of US Soldiers that died in ww1.
I have full access to the website
I will go through this list and see what I can find. If I can confirm anyone dying or surviving I will post here.
I will probably start with the most unusual names first in the hope that they will be easier.
There are a couple of German sounding names in the list!

I have just been on the American Battlefield Monument Commission website and having looked at the first few have found:

Frank J. Gard
First Lieutenant, U.S. Army
362nd Infantry Regiment, 91st Division
Entered the Service from: Ohio
Died: September 29, 1918
Buried at: Plot B Row 33 Grave 24
Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery
Romagne, France

Ralph M. Noble
Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army
342nd Infantry Regiment attached with French
Entered the Service from: Illinois
Died: May 14, 1918
Buried at: Plot A Row 29 Grave 13

There are possible entries for Smith (no surprise there!) and Hall.

Hi Patrick,

Good work on that. there is also a 'Spalding Rugby Year Book' on archive which seems to have some useful information, though my server here at work will not allow me to access archive.org.

Useful to know his university, they may hold more info.

In regards to the date, it may be on his death card. Of course, it is not uncommon to get discrepancies with the CWGC and Soldiers Died either so we may never find out definitely.

Where we stand Empty Frank J Gard

Post  patrickcasey Fri Mar 26, 2010 1:08 am

I don't believe anyone has ever looked at US rugby players to die in WW1 before.

Below link to what I believe to be the WW1 draft of our man.
Frank J Gard Draft

He was born 27th March 1892 (I think thats what it says) in Ohio but lived in Glendora, California. This would make him 20 when he died

I have also found a reference on ancestry of his mother, Laura E Gard of Route 3, Pasadena, Los Angeles doing something called a US World War 1 Mother's Pilgramage in 1930. See below
Name: Mrs Laura E Gard
Given Name: Mrs Laura E
Address: Route 3
City: Pasadena
County: Los Angeles
State: CA
Relationship: Mother
Surname Deceased: Gard
Given Name Deceased: Frank J
Rank: 1st lt
Organization: Co. M, 362d Inf
Cemetery: Meuse-Argonne
Desires Pilgrimage Later: Yes

This is certainly the Frank J. Gard that died in WW1. Hopefully Stanford will confirm that this same Frank J. Gard was the one that played rugby foir the US
I will contact Stanford and tell them about our project and see if they can confirm details about him.

Where we stand Empty Ralph M. Noble

Post  patrickcasey Fri Mar 26, 2010 1:38 am

I believe this to be Ralph Matthews Noble
Born 25th March 1889 Iowa
Registered at Knox Illinois
Below a link to his draft card
https://i.servimg.com/u/f62/15/02/93/02/knoxww10.jpg

There are details and a photo of him at
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSvcid=112326&GRid=9241005&

He also appears to have been to Stanford and graduated in 1913. Again there are pictures of him in the Stanford yearbooks.

It wouldn't suprise me to find out that the US selection was limited to a few clubs, Stanford University being one. This was certainly the case for the 1920 US Olympic rugby team. See http://www.rugbyfootballhistory.com/olympics.htm
US rugby was heavily concentrated in California at the time.

I will see what Stanford can come up with

Post  Tim Fox-Godden Fri Mar 26, 2010 2:28 am

Well done Patrick, some cracking work to find these bits and pieces out.

That is fascinating about Gard's mother, i don't think we could track that information down for a Commonwealth casualty. I am going to have a look through the other links you have posted in a minute.

I have been in touch with the USA Rugby Union who have recently set up a Rugby History working group, I shall let you know what they have to say. I have asked if they have any team shots &c. of the two matches. Intrestingly, Scrum.com has a match against Romania played at Stade Columbes in France, though it has no date, it is just included in the 1910-1919 time period, it also has no team sheet, but, the US won!

Patrick, would like to write up something more solid for Gard and I will do the same for Noble? Then we can compare notes. I only as as Noble played the same position as I Smile Also, I will get a chance to visit Noble in May as I am popping over to Epehy and he is just down the road.

I think you may well be right in regards to the US players. I can find no mention of them anywhere. It make it all rather exciting.

Pip pip,

Tim

Where we stand Empty Gard

I'll put something together next week
Getting this US stuff together will provide a good market for the book in the states.
What about a book launch at Stanford?
Maybe not I'd never come back home

You are absolutely right about the marketing aspects, particularly as the All-Americans do not appear to have been featured in any of the casualty lists or rolls of honour produced since the war.

Ok, just to save you any dilemmas regarding your return or not, I will, with a heavy heart, undertake the US unveiling at Stanford Wink

Where we stand Empty Satnford University

I have been through the Stanford University Roll of Honor for WW1 and there is only Gard and Noble listed that match the US players pre WW1. Note Frank Gard was captain of the USA against the All Blacks in 1913.
I have the 1900 and 1910 US Census with Frank Gard and his family. I will write up

Most excellent work Patrick,

I will add their names to the master list!

Over the next few days I will try to make a page outlining the project for the main website

I might not be able to make Stanford, but with a heavy heart I could force myself to the Twickenham launch (preferably on a six nations day Laughing )

Where we stand Empty Stanford University

Post  patrickcasey Fri Mar 26, 2010 7:14 am

It seems that the Stanford University American Football captains were
Benjamin Erb 1911
Frank J. Gard 1914
D.B.Carroll 1915
who also all played rugby for the USA

Where we stand Empty Danny Carroll

Post  patrickcasey Fri Mar 26, 2010 7:45 am

So he was, although you have the wrong link here, something about a 18th Century politician.
Daniel Carroll was a member of the Australian gold medal team in 1908, and won another gold for the USA in 1920.
Both in rugby. He was player/coach in 1920
He is featured as one of the Australian players in the book The First Wallabies by Peter Sharpham
